I’ve been to Chicago in the Spring a couple of times, and from personal experience, it’s not that much different from Chicago during the Summer or Fall. It tends to be a bit windier (if that’s possible), but the weather is so variable it’s hard to know ahead of time if it will be too cold to do anything outside or not.
If the weather is warm while you’re there, some fun things to do outside include taking a boat tour of the city on the Chicago river. It’s not hard to find sight seeing boats along the river, but if you want to compare prices it’s best to do your research before your trip. Some tours spend more time on the lake front, some spend more time on the river.
If you’re going on a romantic trip, most people swear that the best time to take a boat tour is at night. If you’re with children, it’s best to go during the day so they can see as much of the city as possible.
Chances are that with so many people on Spring break at once that the Sears tower will be very crowded. A great alternative is the Hancock building. I’ve been to both, and I think they’re comparable. They both have beautiful views of the city and Lake Michigan.
If you’re a baseball fan and visiting Chicago in April or May, a great way to spend the day outside is at a White Sox or Cubs game. Tickets for popular teams go fast so be sure to check ticket availability before you get to the stadium. And watch out if you’re routing for the away team, you might get harrassed by some superfans!
Tulip Days is a great way to combine a love of flowers with a love of shopping or even just people watching. The Magnificent Mile is a long row of high end stores in downtown Chicago. Die hard shoppers will love the selection of stores, flower lovers will enjoy the sea of tulips along the street.
Another free way to enjoy the weather is to visit the Lincoln Park Zoo. It’s downtown, close to other attractions, and free to the general public.
After you visit the zoo, you can visit the Lake Michigan beach and the lake front trail. Although the water is too cold for swimming, the view is breathtaking, and it’s a great way to have a rest and relax in the middle of your day.
There is so much to do in Chicago at any time of the year. The city has a great Art Museum, aquarium, Field Museum, and Museum of Science and Technology. You also might be interested in eating at one of their many ethnic restaurants with cuisine available from all around the world. And of course, you should try an authentic Chicago style pizza. Many of the popular pizza places such as Pizzeria Uno have up to an hour wait, so plan in advance.
If you visit Chicago in the Spring, be sure to do your research ahead of time, and bring lots of layers of clothes and an umbrella just in case!
