While most people would discount a winter visit to Chicago due to the below-freezing temperatures, winter is the perfect time to visit the city and explore its quiet, romantic side. With fewer visitors willing to brave the brisk winter weather, Chicago doesn’t have the hustle and bustle that prevails in the warmer months and a trip in winter is truly something worth experiencing.
With dusk coming early in the winter, Chicago is transformed into a winter wonderland of sorts. Lights and holiday decorations can be seen all around but are especially prevalent at the former Marshall Fields location on State Street (now referred to as Macy’s on State Street). Every year the store selects a theme for their window display and features animated scenes re-creating the story in an enchanting way. While at Macy’s, it is worth a step inside to view their 45-foot tall tree decorated with thousands of ornaments.
Near the Macy’s State Street location is the annual Chicago Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza, a large outdoor holiday market based on the traditional German Christmas markets. Here you can enjoy steeping hot cups of spiced cider, traditional German pretzels and other delicacies, as well as shop for European gifts and holiday accoutrements.
Also featured in Daley Plaza is a live Santa Claus in front of the extraordinarily large Christmas tree. Santa is available for photos (for a fee) and will also happily listen to your holiday wish list.
Outdoor ice skating, a favorite Chicago winter activity, is also located the Daley Plaza. Skating is free, but skate rental is additional. Times vary, so it is best to call ahead or check online for hours.
If you’re in a romantic mood and want to treat your sweetie to a special experience (or if you have children who may enjoy it), consider taking a horse-drawn carriage ride. The rides are available throughout the Loop and vary in price. If you so desire, you can purchase some fresh, hot roasted chestnuts from a street vendor to enjoy during your ride.
If you’re quite ready for a break from the biting cold, stop by the Drake Hotel, Peninsula Hotel or Ritz-Carlton for a spot of afternoon tea. If that is a bit too formal for your tastes, there are several great little coffee houses that serve hot chocolate to warm you up.
With its world-class museums, shopping, dining and more, Chicago makes a great destination any time of the year. But it’s the city’s winter offerings that make it especially enjoyable and something to be experienced.
