The best Italian restaurants in Chicago, Illinois

One of the most wonderful things about living in Chicago is the food – there are so many types of cuisines to try all over the city and most of it is just fabulous. And the Italian food is definitely something to brag about.

One of my favorite places to eat in Chicago is the Italian Village located on Monroe, which is made up of three restaurants in one. The three restaurants, The Village, Vivere, and La Cantina, are all three critically acclaimed and the trio is the oldest Italian restaurant in Chicago. From the authentic, classic dishes to the outstanding wine selection to the surprisingly affordable prices, this place has it all. The ambiance is lovely – the setting is beautiful, and there’s always excellent music playing. The service is phenomenal and worth bragging about. I personally love La Cantina the most, and almost always order the lasagne there – it’s incredible. For out-of-towners who want a taste of one of Chicago’s favorite restaurants, I would definitely recommend the Italian Village.

Another great place is Fornello Trattoria on Irving Park. It’s a rather small place mostly frequented by locals like myself. The prices are exceptionally reasonable for excellent Italian dining. The crostini al gorgonzola is a delicious appetizer that I get almost every time I go. The entress and pastas are large, delicious portions that are priced so reasonably you won’t believe it. The chicken breast vesuvio is wonderful and at only $14.95, is well-priced. Also, the timballo di maccheroni is a delicious mix of pasta, sauce, and four cheeses and is only $10.95. During the summer, they offer outdoor patio dining which is really nice on Irving Park because it’s such a laid-back neighborhood with less foot traffic than downtown or the Loop. The service is excellent, and the ambiance is as well. Indoors, there are beautiful murals on the wall. Another plus of Fornello Trattoria is that it’s been endorsed by Rachael Ray, which is even more reason to go there!

My third and last favorite Italian spot in Chicago is Coco Pazzo located on Hubbard. They offer an excellent risotto with white truffle shavings (if in season) which just add the most exquisite touch to the dish. Even the pizza at this fine restaurant is incredible. And my personal favorite, the chocolate cake with a molten-chocolate center with a scoop of cappucino ice cream is absolutely to-die-for. While the prices are rather high, it’s definitely worth it, perhaps for a special occasion. The ambiance is incredible with lovely lighting and the restaurant itself is beautiful and the service is like no other.

If you’re ever in Chicago and want to try truly excellent Italian food, make sure to go to one of these great spots!
