How food enhances our lives

Broiled … sauteed … curried … grilled … slathered with simmering sauce. Ah. Think back through your favorite childhood memories. Now relive, in your mind, the best wedding reception you’ve ever attended or the most fabulous party. Chances are your minded covered at least one favorite food dish along those travels, as food enhances every occasion of our lives – no matter where you live, how you cook, or how spicy you you pile on the flavor.

As if its power to nourish our bodies was not enough, food graces nearly every event we attend, every social gathering, every family moment, even business outings we might rather not frequent. It’s in the kitchen that your guests gather most when they visit your home, and around the dinner table where families regroup after time apart. We share over food, pour out our feelings, bounce off ideas, create plans, dreams, even schemes. We laugh, revisit the past and plan the future ahead.

Turn any conversation to the topic of food, and a study of emotions is soon to follow: Think the bliss of a heaping spoonful of chocolate ice cream at the end of a stressful day, the warmth of homemade soup on a sick day under the covers, the crispness of home-grown vegetables on a summer’s evening and the guilty pleasure of a chili-drenched hot dog at a favorite sporting event. The foods you favor often reflect where you came from and where you’ve settled, hence the distinctive appeal of southern cooking, Chicago-style pizza, over-the-top spicy Texas chili or a festive New England clambake.

Picture this: a mom and her young daughter grasping piping hot chocolate chip cookies from the oven; a father and son sharing stories over the grill, roommates bonding over late-night pizza or young lovers sipping a single milkshake from twin straws.

Now recognize the popularity of television programming geared towards foodies, real TV for the budding chef and a network that showcases the best diner food in the country. As our fascination for good food and all that comes with it continues, so does our fascination with what makes life so enjoyable.

No matter how you slice it, your favorite cuisine says much about you. Food for the body? Oh yes, but even more so, food for the soul.
