It is amazing that I live in Calumet City, a place of safe neighborhoods, lots of shopping and other activities that enhance the health and activity of its residents, such as parks, golf courses and outdoor tracks, but when I am out of town, I usually say I am from Chicago. Why do I do that? Mainly because out of town people are more familiar with Chicago than they are with a city considered a suburb of Chicago.
This article is about my beautiful city of Calumet. Geographically located south of the little Calumet River where it gets it name, it is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Our Mayor whom we endearingly call “Mayor Michelle” is one of the most available, caring, concerned people I have ever encountered. In her first run for the Office of Mayor, someone else sat in the seat as Mayor before a re-count proved that she was our Mayor. I knew if I voted for her she had to win and I did in fact vote for her in the beginning. Thank God the re-count put her where she belonged.
I have seen so many improvements in Calumet City during her tenure, especially in the park activities. During the summer months, we had “movies under the stars” in the parks and on the campus of Thornton Fractional North High School (TFNHS). I am physically challenged to move about and enjoy the City like I used to eight years ago, but despite any physical challenges, I am still made welcome to visit our wonderful Mayor in her office as she has an “open door” policy.
When we had the big flood last October, our Mayor was right out there trying to stop the flood waters from getting into the homes of our residents. Calumet City could not have asked for more from her. Calumet City is blessed to have one of the finest libraries in the State. A friend of mine used to come out here from the South side of Chicago to use the library facilities of the Calumet City Library. That was such a compliment to me! The library rents movies and rare books upon request.
If you ever get tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, Calumet City is a good place for fine dining, sports, recreation and shopping, etc. The River Oaks shopping center is one of my favorite places. In east River Oaks the enclosed mall is a good place to shop or just browse. Inside the mall are theatres and a college with a large curriculum. Moving to Calumet City will enhance your quality of life by making you feel safe and secured. Whether you are young or “young at heart”, Calumet City has something to offer you. As a mature person, I enjoy the park and park facilities. My grandchildren loved attending TFNHS. The Park District has all kinds of activities for the young and the young at heart. They even have an annual dance recital at TFNHS with the most colorful dance costumes I have ever seen! My granddaughter participated each year until she moved to Texas. I will still attend that dance recital even though she is not here. You will not want to miss it in May, 2009. Check out my wonderful home of Calumet City, Illinois.
