Do people vacation primarily for excitement or relaxation?

My recently acquired wife and I were very much in need of relaxation. We had recently undergone much family stress and wanted to get away from Chicago. But we were severely limited as to funds.

The phone rang in our central Chicago fifth floor walk-up apartment.

It was a colleague and friend, the neurologist George Brainerd, and as head of the search for a cure for migraine headaches, he was MD President of the Brain Trust.

“How would you two like to go to Copenhagen, Denmark and as reporters, cover the international meeting of the Headache Foundation? I can’t pay you a lot, but Bill can bring his portable TV camera- recorder and cover the whole convention. 500 neuurologists will come there to study migraines, and the new Interational President, Princess Margaret of England, will preside!” I hastened to assure him that we would love to come.

Three days later, my wife Rita and I put our small motorcycle and my backpack TV equipment in the luggage compartment of an international flight to Copenhagen, and went aboard with Dr. Brainerd and 200 other neurologists. Other planes were converging on Copenhagen with hundreds of other headache specialists.

Arriving in Copenhagen, we two, my wife and I, hada shock. Publicity wary Princess Margaret had ruled out reporters, writers, newspapermen, and cameras.

Brianerd grinned and said:” Go on vacation and meet us at the airport in London in three weeks, naming a date and hour of redeparture of the flight Copenhagen-London-Chicago. So we two put on our samesex motorcycle clothes, tied a small bag to the luggage rack, and took off into Copenhagen.

We spent the first night in the Gardens pitching our small nylon tent, and finding all of the Danes hospitable and very nice to us. We had $300 in cash to last us back to the U.S.! (It was 1970).

We knew of a family on the coast of Denmark whose daughter had been our friend in California, and we phoned and were given a cheery invitation to visit Castle Elsinore and their nearby home.

Arriivng we found the Father of our California friend to be 101 years old, vigorous and in perfect health, and remarried to a 22 year old beauty of a wife.

After visiting the Shakespeare castle, we accompainied our phenomenon old man in a walking trip to the top of a promontory where he had an ancient lighthouse, us puffing behnd the centenarian, whle he literally ran up the mountain, puffing on a cigar.

Back to his 300 year old home, and a meal of sandwiches from Mrs. 22 year
