On Tuesday, after a long seven year absence, Madonna made her return to hometown Detroit playing to a crowd of 30,000 at Ford Field on her Sticky and Sweet tour. Not bad for a last minute addition. Throughout the two-hour concert Madonna played to the home crowd eagerly stating over and over how good it was to be home. At one point she acknowledged just how long it had been declaring, “I don’t come here very often so please make a big deal about it!”
The only damper on the evening was the low crowd attendance. The Ford Field date was the first on the tour not to sellout mostly due to Michigan’s down economy and the fact that the date was announced so late. Many Michiganders bought tickets to the Toronto and Chicago tour dates thinking that like Madonna’s last two tours, there would not be a Detroit stop. In August she came to Traverse City to premiere her documentary “I Am Because We Are” and was inundated with requests to do a show here prompting the addition to the schedule.
Despite the fact that the concert was due to start at 7:30, Madonna did not take the stage until around 9:30 because they were waiting for the main floor to fill up. Downtown Detroit has a bad history of parking issues and apparently many of the lots filled up too quick. Madonna’s DJ Enferno came out around 8:00 and spun some songs for a half hour to keep the crowd entertained. Despite the crowd getting restless, once the lights went down, everyone was up on their feet ready to dance.
The last time Madonna was in Detroit was for 2001’s Drowned World tour. Although the show was entertaining, it relied heavily on visual aspects rather than the music. She concentrated mostly on her new material. This time around, however, she managed to pay tribute to every era of her career as well as showcased new tracks off of her latest album Hard Candy. Although the show featured some amazing visual effects, the night was more about dancing and having a good time than anything else.
The show opened with Madonna appearing on a throne with a enormous smile singing Candy Shop and moving across the stage with her enormous dance troupe. She moved on to another new track Beat Goes On bringing a vintage car out to the stage. Next up was the defiant Human Nature
with background Britney Spears video and Madonna on electric guitar. “Why should I be sorry?” she asked the crowd. “I’m from Detroit!” Later, she gave a nod to the Wizard of Oz; clicking her heels and stating, “There’s
